If you’re reading this, you may already sense that aging looks a little different for you than it did for your parents’ generation. You might be single, divorced, childless, or simply living far from family. Whatever your story, you are far from alone.
Today, approximately 24 million Americans ages 50 and older live alone, roughly 20% of the U.S. population in that age range. By 2038, Harvard experts estimate that the majority of people age 80 and older, about 10 million, will be Solo Agers. And yet, more than half of Solo Agers say they do not feel confident about living alone as they age.
That gap between reality and readiness is exactly why planning matters. Here are five things you can do right now to take control of your future.
1. Get Your Legal Papers in Order
A will, healthcare proxy, and durable power of attorney are not just for the wealthy or the seriously ill. They are for anyone who wants their voice heard when it matters most. Without these documents, strangers or courts may make decisions for you. Only 65% of Solo Agers have even taken the basic step of designating an emergency contact, a reminder of how much work remains for most of us. 2. Know Where You Stand Financially
Review your savings, income sources, benefits, and long-term care options. Leverage the financial planning resources for older adults here. Nearly 76% of senior renters spend more than 30% of their income on housing alone, leaving little room for unexpected medical or care expenses. Understanding your numbers today gives you the power to make smart choices before a crisis forces your hand.
3. Plan for Your Care Needs
This is the question most Solo Agers quietly avoid: Who will step in if I can no longer manage on my own? The answer should not be “I’ll figure it out later.” Only about one in four Solo Agers has someone they can count on to help with everyday tasks like cooking, cleaning, or grocery shopping if needed. A trusted advocate, professional care manager, or fiduciary can fill this gap, but only if you plan for it now.
One area that is often overlooked is medication management. As we age, managing multiple prescriptions becomes increasingly complex and the risks of missed doses, dangerous interactions, or incorrect timing can have serious health consequences. For Solo Agers with no one at home to notice a problem, this risk is even greater. At Maxwell Senior Care, Patricia provides hands-on medication management support, helping clients stay on track, avoid preventable complications, and communicate effectively with their physicians. It is one of the most impactful services a care manager can provide, and one of the most needed.

4. Make Your Home Safe for the Long Haul
Most of us want to stay in our own homes as we age, and that is completely achievable with some foresight. Simple modifications like grab bars, better lighting, and removing trip hazards can prevent falls and costly hospitalizations. The U.S. has the highest rate of seniors living alone of any country in the world, at 27% of adults over 60, compared to a global average of 16%. That means home safety is not just a personal issue. It is a national one.
5. Build Your Support Network Intentionally
Independence does not mean isolation. In fact, more than one in three adults ages 50 to 80 reported feeling lonely at least some of the time in 2024. The good news? Connection is a choice. Most Solo Agers are actively prioritizing their networks, with 86% focused on nurturing existing relationships and 71% actively working to grow new ones. Neighbors, community groups, faith communities, and care advocates can all become your people. Start building that circle now, not later.
You Don’t Have to Figure This Out Alone.
